Massage Business Trends

August 24, 2010 by Ivy Hultquist

Every July and August my business slows down and there are open appointments, a rarity in my practice. I know many of my clients take a few days to visit the Iowa State Fair get their fill of various “foods-on-a-stick”. Others take their summer vacations, are hosting out-of-town visitors, or running all of their kids between swimming lessons and baseball practice. During my first few years in practice I panicked during these slow downs. Then I saw the trend forming and now I just enjoy the break while it lasts. Now, September is coming, I could feel it when I walked outside today. I know more massage sessions and phone calls will come when I flip the calendar in a few days. Then February will roll around and I will see another slow down.

When are your slow times? When are your busy times? Do you sit back and enjoy the break? Do you use your slow times to read massage books or take your massage CEUS? Do you offer incentives (coupons or discounts) to keep your schedule full?

Tip: With college kids moving into their dorms, it is time to stock up on sheets. Soon there will be clearance racks full of brightly colored twin sheets.
