Tips for a Green Massage Therapy Business

November 21, 2010 by Ivy Hultquist

Reduce ~ Reuse ~ Recycle

There is a misconception that running a green business means being a “radical environmentalist”. There are many shades of green. You will just have to decide what shade of green you want your business. We all have a responsibility to try, even if this means you are a mint green shade. If you want to run a 99.9% green business, then you can be bright green. Reducing our “Carbon Footprint” refers to your impact on the environment by measuring how much carbon dioxide a particular activity, purchase, or product produces. For example, driving a car to the store produces much more carbon dioxide than walking to the store. In the long run, greening your business can increase your profits and make for a brighter future for others. Here are a couple ideas on how you can operate a greener massage business:

Lights- Not that we need or desire bright lights in the massage room, but energy efficient light bulbs are one of the easiest ways anyone can green up their business. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) or LED are two common green lighting choices.

Paper – 100% recycled paper is readily available. Consider using email marketing instead of mailing postcards. Try using soy inks too.

Buy Organic, when possible – This cuts down on pesticides used to make our cream, oils, and lotions. Also, consider buying organic cotton sheets.

Buy in Bulk – This help save shipping and product packaging. Be careful not to buy too much oil, lotion, or cream, because it can go rancid.

Be Energy Efficient– As massage professionals, we do our fair share of laundry. Energy efficient washing machines can cut down on water sent out to the waterways and power. Most of the energy to do a load of laundry (on hot) comes from the heating the water (water heater). Having an energy efficient water heater and appliances can make a big difference. Power companies often offer great rebates and incentives on energy efficient appliances.

Be Travel Savvy– Making one trip to pick up supplies can cut down on gas consumption. Consider walking our biking when possible. Although, I do not recommend biking with a laundry basket.

Buy Local When Possible – Buying local helps support your neighbors and the environment.
Cleaners and Detergents – Greener cleaners are better for our health and environment. Plant based cleansers have improved and are more economical. Environmentally friendly laundry detergents are better for our waterways.

What “green” practices do you use in your massage business? List them here so we can all work towards a healthier world.
